Allyship & Creating Safe and Inclusive Environments Workshop

On October 28, UF Health Science Center Jacksonville’s IDEA Advisory Council and the UF Health Diversity Council will host an Allyship & Creating Safe and Inclusive Environments workshop. More details on the virtual workshop are below.

In the midst of challenges we face during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical for all of us to be more inclusive and respond to microaggressions through allyship. Please join us for an important workshop to address this topic, which will be led by Diana Lautenberger, director for faculty and staff research and lead of Gender Equity Lab at the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Workshop: Allyship & Creating Safe and Inclusive Environments

Experiences of bias, harassment and microaggressions are expanding areas of focus for faculty, administrators and leaders in health care as awareness of the prevalence of these experiences has increased. Research on microaggressions and bias has shown to have negative impacts on physical health, professional performance and overall well-being. To address this need, more awareness, education and training to develop allies is sorely needed in academic medicine. During this workshop, participants will reflect on their own identities and privilege, learn how power and bias manifest as microaggressions and learn about strategies on how to act as an ally in the workplace to support others. Participants will come away from this workshop understanding that a culture of respect and accountability is created and maintained through everyday acts of allyship, small and large.

The objectives of the workshop include:  

• Reflect on multiple identities and how identities with more power create dominant cultures.
• Explore concepts of allyship as a daily action of aligning oneself in solidarity with others.
• Draw connections between daily practices of allyship as a function of inclusion and how small language and behavior changes transform environments into ones that are safe and welcoming for everyone.
