The Jacksonville Nonprofit Hospital Partnership, a coalition of local health care organizations, has developed a racial health equity conference series in an effort to enhance awareness and understanding on factors that negatively impact the delivery of health care for members of racial and ethnic minorities.

In light of recent national and regional events and consistent community health trends, the partnership believes it is more important than ever to look at ways this community and others can overcome barriers and provide an equitable system in which every person has access to good medical care to help improve their quality of life.

Race & Place: COVID-19 – Dispelling Myths and Misconceptions

May 2020

Rooting ourselves in resiliency, a panel of local African American doctors weighed in on the myths, misconceptions and facts about Coronavirus and how we can save African American lives.

Panelists included:

  • Dr. William L. Cody, an OB-GYN at Ascension St. Vincent’s
  • Dr. Timothy Groover, president of physician alignment at Baptist Health
  • Dr. Leon L. Haley, Jr., CEO of UF Health Jacksonville and dean of the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville
  • Dr. Pauline Rolle, interim health officer and medical executive direct or the Duval County Department of Health
  • Dr. Floyd Willis, assistant professor of family medicine, Mayo Clinic

Racial Health Equity Conferences

This conference series launched in September 2020 and held monthly sessions which concluded in December 2020. The series had a total of more than 745 attendees. While the target audience was for those in Jacksonville, FL and surrounding communities, multiple attendees joined from other states across our nation, including California, Vermont, Washington State and Georgia.

Topic 1: Advocating for your health

Who Should Attend: All interested in learning how to advocate for their personal health

Panelists included:

  • Sheryl Heron, MD, MPH, FACEP, professor & associate dean of community engagement, equity & inclusion at Emory University School of Medicine
  • Susan Salahshor, PhD, PA-C, DFAAPA, Salashor Leadership & Advocacy Group

The conference was moderated by Ed Perez, President and CEO of the Three Grains of Rice Mission. More than 150 attendees joined.
